My son also enjoys the mine craft lately i think he has been enjoying the pvp servers 
Let me know in a pm sometime if either of you have a family friendly server for him to play or to try his maps. Which i quite enjoy.
We also recommend terrarria which is a 2d side scroller as you know i'm partial to 2d side scrolling games
Tho if you are going to fight the pirate army make sure you have 2-3 hours to defeat them
we did get the Coin Gun which is a 1 in 8000 drop so he was happy and kept it for himself.
